Resolving ‘Filesystem verify or repair failed’ Error

Mac OS X are  more secure from corruption point of view. This is owing to a host of crash recovery features like, file system journaling, However, there still exist some situations that can corrupt Mac OS X volumes. These volumes comprise of metadata structures like, Master Directory Block, catalog file, etc. that might corrupt the volume and renders it inaccessible for  users . Most of these corruptions can be detected and repaired by ‘Disk Utility’. But if the problem remains unresolved, you should delete the corrupted volume, provided, a good backup of required data is available. But if such a backup does not exist, run a Mac File recovery software and extract all possible data.

‘Disk Utility’ fails to repair the corrupted volume in many instances. To support the fact, let’s consider a realistic situation, wherein, a Mac OS X user tries to mount a volume that has been named as ‘Volume1′. This volume contains important files and folders, but, when an attempt is made to mount it, it cannot be mounted. Running ‘Disk Utility’ on this volume shows the below error messages:

  • - Verifying volume “Volume1”
  • - Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
  • - Checking Extents Overflow file.
  • - Invalid map node
  • - Checking Catalog file.
  • - Invalid sibling link
  • - Volume check failed.
  • - Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
  • - This error by ‘Disk Utility’ indicates that the volume is corrupted - The file system of volume is corrupted. Such errors won’t allow you to access the files and folders stored in the affected volume.
How to Fix ‘Filesystem verify or repair failed’ Error?

Issues, which cannot be fixed by ‘Disk Utility’ should be resolved by running fsck manually. To do so, boot the computer in a single-user mode and while the computer is booting, press ‘command’ and S keys down. Next, you need to type fsck -fy command.

If the issue continues, you can delete the volume and restore data from backup. However, to extract data from corrupted volume, you need a Mac Data Recovery solution. Mac Recovery software are easy-to-use and can scan a corrupted Mac volume to recover all lost data.
